6 Tips for Starting Therapy in 2025

This blog has been prepared for you by registered psychologist and psychosexual therapist, Carla Jones.

We’re back from our break and looking forward to seeing all of our amazing clients, those who are returning and those who are coming to therapy for the first time! Regardless of whether this is your first rodeo or not, jumping into therapy is a courageous step toward understanding ourselves more deeply and creating lasting change.

Here are our top tips for getting off to a good start in your therapy sessions in 2025:

1. Clarify Your Goals

Take some time before your first session to think about what you’d like to achieve. Are you seeking support for a specific challenge, like anxiety or relationship issues? Or are you looking to overcome trauma, develop greater self-awareness, or improve your sexual health? Your therapist can help you to refine these goals, but having a starting point makes the process more intentional.

2. Be Honest and Open

Therapy is a space where you can bring your whole self – your fears, hopes, and even the things you’ve never shared with anyone else. While it can feel vulnerable at first, being honest with your therapist allows them to understand your experiences fully and support you effectively. Remember, therapy is a collaborative process. If something isn’t working for you, let your therapist know. We are here to adapt to your needs and ensure you’re getting the most out of our time together.

3. Practice Patience

Things don’t magically change on the 1st of January, and it’s the same with therapy! Progress in therapy takes time, and it’s not always linear. Some sessions may feel transformative, while others might feel more like groundwork. Trust the process and remember that healing and growth unfold at their own pace.

4. Celebrate Your Wins

Maybe you’re really proud of things that you achieved in 2024. Perhaps you’re just happy with surviving the holidays! Acknowledging your successes, no matter how small, is vital. Therapy isn’t just about addressing challenges – it’s also about building on your strengths and celebrating the steps you’re taking toward being your best and most authentic self.

5. Put It In The Calendar

Have a chat with your therapist about how often you can attend therapy. Your clinician will have a good idea of what will be effective based on what your goals are and what type of therapy you are doing. Of course, we know that there are often practical considerations, so we also try to balance our clinical knowledge with what will work best for you overall. Starting the year with your sessions booked in allows you to plan adequately, but also ensures that your preferred time slot doesn’t get snapped up!

6. Embrace Homework (If Given)

Sometimes we give you homework (not all the time, I promise!!). Sometimes it’s fun, but other times it’s challenging. Engaging with your homework can deepen your understanding and help integrate what you’re learning into daily life. Afterall, we want to make sure all of your hard work in session has an impact on the rest of your life!
